Uma Sampathkumaran, PhD, Director of Research, has over 20 years of experience in the synthesis (wet chemical, sol-gel, and solid-state processing) and characterization of bulk and thin film ceramics, optical waveguides from low temperature and high temperature processing of spin-on-glasses and, ORMOSILS.  Polymer-ceramic thick film composites, microwave processing of materials and surface modification of materials are other areas of her expertise.  She received her doctoral degree from the Indian Institute of Technology in 1995, specializing in materials science.  She developed composite microwave absorbing paint formulations, and designed and fabricated a spin-spray-coating unit to grow ferrite thin films for mm wave applications at the Indian Institute of Technology.  At Indiana University(Bloomington), Dr. Sampathkumaran pursued the surface mapping of electropolished, anodized nanostructures on aluminum by AFM and electrical characterization by Impedance Spectroscopy.  As a Senior Research Associate at the Case Western Reserve University, Dr. Sampathkumaran pursued the low temperature processing routes to fabricate oxide thin films on substrates (Si, Ti, glass) coated with self-assembled monolayers(SAMs)--zirconia, titania, undoped tin oxide, hydroxyapatite, and iron oxide coatings.  Prior to joining INNOSENSE LLC in 2004, she developed low-temperature-based thin and thick film optical waveguides at OptiNetrics, Inc.  Dr Sampathkumaran has over 16 publications in technical journals and conference proceedings.
